To the editor:

There was an unfair advantage at the Wilson County Fair mule pulling contest. The call for participants to pay the entry fee 15 minutes after the event was to begin should have been done weeks or months earlier when they signed up or at least when the mules were weighed in. Four pairs of mules had been ready 30 minutes by then. Fairgoers waited and left when not told why the show was not starting.

At 4:10 p.m., a fairgoer (not those in charge) explained the show wouldn’t start until 4:30 p.m. because some participants just got there and their mules “needed to rest.” I call that an unfair advantage over the mules that were there on time and waiting in the heat.

Other equine events state that if you are not ready to go at showtime, you are disqualified and forfeit your entry fee. Why does this not apply at the fair? Can we expect this same problem or worse next year?
