It was ugly. It was crude. There were no holds barred. We called fellow students fags and queers and whores and sluts and fat and worse. It was a time when gay people were taboo and mostly unknown, especially in rural Alabama, so it was widely accepted to give folks a little different from us derogatory labels, regardless of their sexual orientation.
