Belhaven blazes by Bulldogs in finale
JACKSON, Miss. — Cumberland uses the phoenix to symbolize its rising from the ashes of the Civil War.
But the Bulldog football team was burned by a different Phoenix on Saturday afternoon. Belhaven receiver Phoenix Thompson torched the Bulldog defense for two first-quarter touchdown catches as the Blazers finished off a red-hot second half of the season with a 39-7 scorching of Cumberland.
Henry also threw touchdown tosses of 47 and 32 yards to Graylin Allison in the first half as the Blazers finished a 6-5 season following an 0-5 start.
Cumberland fell behind 20-0 in the first quarter as Coach Dewayne Alexander's first Bulldog team finished a 3-7 season.
The Bulldogs got on the board early in the second quarter on Matt Eads' 20-yard pass to Zach Richardson to draw within 20-7.
But Luckett kicked a 24-yard field goal and Henry hooked up with Allison on the 32-yarder for a 30-7 halftime lead.
Lee Dyson scored on a 1-yard run in the third quarter and Cumberland's Joseph Teo was tackled in the end zone for a safety.
Belhaven outgained Cumberland 422 yards to 201. Henry completed 21 of 34 passes for 315 yards. Thompson caught eight passes for 135 yards while Allison added five grabes for 109 more.
