Board-bashing Dawgs defeat Oakwood 78-68
Neither team shot well, but Cumberland's men crashed the boards to take down visiting Oakwood 78-68 Tuesday in the Bulldogs' home opener at the Dallas Floyd Center.
Cumberland corraled 51 rebounds to Oakwood's 29. That enabled the Bulldogs to overcome .356 shooting. The visitors were little better at .358.
Maurice Johnson sank 11 of 12 free throws to lead Cumberland with 13 points while DeCorey Young added 11 as the Bulldogs improved to 3-0. Aurimas Silys notched nine points; Torrez Hampton, Jason Langelier and Desmond Rhodes six each; Channing Tucker and Chase Burnett five apiece; Joseph Northington, Steven Jamison and Kevin Bufford four each, Thomas Douglas three and Ponce Palmer two.
Bufford brought down a game-high nine rebounds and three blocked shots whie Langelier finished with four steals.
Terrell Black tossed in 20 points, Blain Gentry 17 and Dewitt Henley 11 for Oakwood, which fell to 1-4.
Cumberland will travel to Columbia, Ky., this weekend for the Lindsey Wilson Classic at 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
