Commanders claim District 8-A-AA crown
NASHVILLE — Friendship Christian's boys won the District 8-AA team championship Tuesday with a 5-1 win over Merrol Hyde at Hadley Park.
Merrol Hyde took the girls' title with a 4-3 win over the Lady Commandres.
Singles winners for the Commanders were Dillon Bane over Alan Wong 6-0, 6-0; Andrew Neely over Taylor Leath 6-0, 6-0; Hunter Harwell over Judson Lancina 6-1, 6-0 and Jonathan Huddleston over Cole Welch 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.
Bane and Neely beat Wong and Braxton Wilson in doubles 8-2.
Wilson picked up Merrol Hyde's only win with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 decision over Jordan Huddleston.
Merrol Hyde's girls overcame an 0-2 start in singles to win the last three and split a pair of doubles matches.
Singles winners for the Lady Hawks were Melanie Martin over Amanda Ferrell 7-6, 6-4; Shannon Hargis over Ashley Ayub 6-2, 6-1 and Crystal Diep over Katie Mitchell 6-3, 6-3. Alaina Kiskaddon and Bianca Reid defeated Ferrell and Ayub in doubles 8-2.
Lady Commander winners were Paige Watson over Kiskaddon 2-6, 6-3, 6-4; Christen Tressler over Reid 1-6, 6-1, 6-1 and Watson and Tressler over Hargis and Martin 8-0.
Friendship's boys will compete in the Region 5-A-AA match next week. Both Friendship teams and Mt. Juliet Christian will play in the district individual tournament at 9 a.m. Monday at Hadley Park.
