Do Lebanon's elected officials need term limits? Tell us what you think
Email Print
City councilman Haywood Barry will introduce a resolution Tuesday night to limit the terms of city elected officials.
This populist vision of electorate control has been debated since the founders formed our government as Mr. Barry already suggested.
Councilman Barry has outlined the demagogic reasoning quite admirably stating that it would “bring in new ideas,” “it gives more people a chance to be popular,” “it’s less of a ‘good-ol-boy’ kind of thing,” and he even mentioned that our founding fathers thought term limits a good idea as well.
Councilman Barry also listed some ideas that might arise on the other side of the debate. He mentioned that there would be “more turnover” and that there would “be a loss of experience.”
However, at the same time, we wonder why Councilman Barry felt the need to assure us all that because of the council's staggered terms there would not be an immediate loss of experience.
Could it be that we are in the middle of the some of the worst budget problems since the Great Depression, and because of that right, now would be the worst time to drain our public think tanks of their experience?
It will take more than one vote of the city council to pass this resolution, as well as a private act by the state legislature, so we have time for some discussion about the issue.
We want to know what you, the citizens of Lebanon, think. More importantly, we think the city council needs to know your thoughts before the final votes are cast.
Share your thoughts by going to www.lebanondemocrat.com and go the last item on the right hand side of the blue menu bar titled "Take Our Polls." Click on "Take Our Polls" and vote in our online poll called "Term Limits."
In addition, if you wish to share your thoughts, you may also go the "News" item in the same blue menu bar and click on "Our Viewpoints" in the drop-down menu. There you will find this editorial and you can leave your comments and thoughts about the issue.
Or you can write us a letter to the editor of 400 words or less. Be sure and include your name, street address and a phone number so we can contact you to verify you are the author. You mail e-mail you letter to ameliahipps@lebanondemocrat.com or mail it to Amelia Hipps, Managing Editor, P.O. Box 430, Lebanon, TN 37088.
Next Monday, Feb. 8, we will publish some of your online comments as well as the votes in the poll.
It's your government, so let us know what you think.

absolutely every politician needs term limits. that way we continue to get fresh representation and this way we try to get away with the "good old boy" mentality

Do these elected positions also have pensions as a benefit? If so I feel they should be abolished. It is my opinion that no one should be able to draw a pension from an elected position. Limiting terms to 1 even 2 at the most would eliminate the apparent need to have pensions. If people are really concerned with doing the right thing while in office then just by knowing they only have so much time to do it might spur them on to get it done sooner.

What in the Hell is New Blood? All these People wanting to tell me who I can and can't vote for need to run for election. Term limits are decided at the Polls by us, the people.

If term limits are good enough for the president and the governor, they're good enough for ALL elected positions. And personally, I think there should be a limit to the number of positions for which one candidate could run. We can't get "new blood" if we continue to recycle candidates from position to position.

Yes, I too believe there should be term limits to all elected positions. We already have limits for president so why not all others all the way down to county and city officials. If the same person couldn't run for every term it would open things up to others who might otherwise be detered because they just feel like they couldn't run because someone else has held the seat for so many years. Just because someone can keep getting reelected doesn't necessarily mean that they are doing the best job they can. Just as with any job people can become complacent or concerned only with being reelected next time. As with any job no one is irreplaceable and there is always some else that can do the job. At one point any incumbent was new so if they could learn what to do then obviously another person can too.

i think all elected jobs should have term limits no matter how big or little the job is

While there is several ideas on term limits, I think there should be area limits. By that I mean, where they can get their money to run for office.

Our national senators should not be allowed to collect money from anyone out of the state they are going to represent, especially giant corporations. The state senators should be held into the district they are going to represent under the same profile. The representatives should be held into the districts they are going to represent, with no corporation money. In too many ways, that is a simple buy out. We got you in office now you vote like we tell you.

This would open the doors for so many good, honest (did I use that word correctly?) individuals who might like to represent their district.

I made a mistake in term limits. Several state governors have term limits.

And let's face it folks, the only reasons they are kept in office is US! In essence, we have no gripe.

I would like to hear some concrete data from Tennessee cities the same size as Lebanon who have term limits. It is difficult to make a decision without any information.

Terry3, at one time, several offices had term limits at the county levels. People were elected for those offices at the wish of the people who wanted them there. Those offices have had the term limits eliminated and several of them now have given knowledge requirements. Considering it, those who put those laws into place (legislature), have no legal requirement except location and age.

To my illiterate knowledge, only the President of our nation now has a term limit, and that was put in place under Harry Truman.

Term limits are needed.. Time to break up the Good ole boy network

The thought of some one taking my right to vote away is assinine just as this proposal is. this is the same as telling me I can vote for anyone in Lebanon except the one you may want to vote for. I've read all the reasons including the rediculous statement Im afraid to vote against the incumbent. I voted against Don Fox every time he ran and will again. grow up and vote for who you want. Yes Judge if there were term limits the first should be on pompass ass Judges like you.

Yes. Term limits are needed and constitutional. All those who voted against the term limits should be voted out their next election..

By: Paulw on 2/12/10
All things considered, we already have term limits. That's why we call them elections every so often. The problem is, when someone gets in an office, too many people don't want to vote against them. The seem to not be able to see what their opponents stand for.

Term limits will only become effective when it becomes a technical matter.. in writing.

Corrupted Politicians!!!! Before we address term limits, why don’t we REALLY find out where Ward 2 City Councilman Kevin Huddleston lives? Everyone in Ward 2 knows “Our Voice” does not live where he says he does but for fear of retaliation what can we do!!! He gives his parents address and changes cars during the day and night but everyone knows, he does not live their. He gives he’s parents phone and their information but it isn’t the TRUTH. During his last elections he buttered us up with ALL of these promises and NOTHING has changed. If I know what I know now, I would not have voted for him!! He’s collecting a monthly check from the City as a Councilman and for what! He DOES not live in WARD 2. As a matter of a fact, he does not own any property but he’s voting on increasing our property taxes!!! How can “OUR Voice” vote when he’s a lie, himself!!!

IN MY OPINION -- Our biggest concern at election time should be - Does this Elected Official have the good of ALL the people in his heart and will he vote or work towards that in everything he does?
Continual re-election is about maintaining power, not what's good for ALL the people. Our city seems to be eaten up with whats good for this party or that, or more likely this interest or that.
Long term politicians are usually controlled by commitment to the people or group that continually put them in power. The funny thing is we seem to think that is O.K.But -It's not. That type of politics is usually corrupt and is not a service to ALL the people. No one group has all the right answers. No one group should profit continually because they can raise more money or buy a better campaign. And NO they don't have the right to expect anything personal in return for their political contributions. We've lost sight of the reason to serve the people. We need to stop voting for this party or that, and vote for the individual and his ideas. The parties are corrupt.
George Washington thought limits should be put on elected officials because he knew long terms created power and that kind of power corrupted. George Washington withdrew from running for office again for that very reason even though he was a shew in for election again. Many of the for-fathers had that same opinion.
Fresh new ideas, fresh personal drive to achieve goals, the needs of the community above the greed of a few, would be a great improvement over what exists now.
Term limits return the power to the people,
I think the only people voting AGAINST term limits WILL BE THE PEOPLE THAT ARE CORRUPT or approve of that type of government.
I despise the Democrat and Republican parties for what they have destroyed in our system and done to our country. They only care about power and not whats good.
Term limits will go a long way in stopping that.
I'm an American and I only care if an idea is good or bad and not what party it came from or who's palm is getting greased. It's time for this.
