Driver crashes into church

A vehicle driven by an unknown motorist crashed into the Unity Church building over the weekend, causing structural damage in the worship center.

"It must have happened Saturday night," Unity Church Pastor Kenneth Bowen said. "The gentleman in the building next door said he didn't notice any damage when he was here Saturday morning."

Bowen noted when the congregation came together for Sunday evening service, having canceled regular services due to the weather, the damage was discovered.

One wall in the worship center was crushed in and Bowen said the damage could have been worse.

"If the stage hadn't been there, the whole wall might have collapsed," he noted. "Heavy as the stage is, it was even moved a good two inches."

The church parking area is closed off with cones when church is not in session, and Bowen said some of the cones had been moved. He added the police officer who wrote the report told him it looked like someone had done donuts in the parking lot and lost control.
