Extra-long van ride followed by CU win
LAURINBURG, N.C. — Cumberland won 7 of 10 matches Thursday night at Harris Court to defeat St. Andrews Presbyterian 34-18.
After a scheduled seven-hour van ride turned into nine because of a few detours, Cumberland was late for weigh-ins and three Bulldogs didn't make weight.
CU sophomore Desean Willis opened the match with a 17-6 major decision over sophomore Kyle Craver at 125 for a 4-0 Bulldog lead.
St. Andrews forfeited at 133 to sophomore Eric Rogers to build a 10-0 lead.
Cumberland forfeited the next two weights at 141 and 149 to shoot St. Andrews into a 12-10 lead. CU sophomore Kyle Knox then received a forfeit at 157 to boost the Bulldogs back in front 16-12.
The Bulldogs won the next two bouts. Redshirt freshman Kurt Hamilton won at 165, defeated junior Brian Roznowski 6-2. After giving up a forfeit at 174, freshman Kyle Studer clinched a 6-1 win for Cumberland over freshman D.J. Chverchko.
Cumberland ended the night with two pin falls. Sophomore Luke Borneman pinned freshman Alex Mathews in 3:41 at 197. Freshman Xavier Taylor downed junior Charles Richardson in 1:26 at 285 pounds.
