Joseph’s Storehouse to give away 400 Christmas turkeys

Joseph's Storehouse Food Ministry is once again making sure Wilson County families in need have food for the upcoming holiday.

The ministry will give more than 400 large turkeys to needy families during the December food distribution on Dec. 13 and Dec. 15. The distribution will be from 8:30 a.m. until noon on both days in preparation for the Christmas holiday.

"We really appreciate the generosity of our financial partners who have made it possible for each family to receive a nice, large gobbler this season. And we are also thankful for their ongoing contributions throughout this year which have helped us to feed thousands of hungry families here in our county who would otherwise go without food," said Joseph’s Storehouse founder Brother Bob Evans.

Evans said the ministry could help even more people if it had a place to store donations.

"There is much more donated food available to us which we could give away each month if only we had somewhere to store it. We have already collected $25,000 for our new 9,600-square-feet warehouse, and we hope to pour the cement floor before this winter is over, but we need an additional $275,000 to complete the addition. If 1,000 families could each give $275, it would provide us with this much-needed facility," he said.

The ministry's new structure is being built behind its existing warehouse on S.E. Tater Peeler Road in Lebanon. While work is ongoing, the ministry hopes for more donations to speed up the project to make it possible to store more food to be distributed to people in need in Wilson County.

The Joseph's Storehouse Food Ministry gives food to qualified Wilson County residents who can prove their residency and income with two forms of official documentation such as a Social Security card, a TN driver's license and/or a US or TN government ID card, etc.; proof of income for the past 6 to 12 months; and a utility bill such as an electricity or water bill. Upon approval by the Joseph's Storehouse staff, recipients will receive a Joseph's Storehouse ID card which is valid for six months to receive food on an ongoing basis.

The giveaway on Dec. 13 is only for persons who can prove, with a doctor's note, they have a physical handicap. The Dec. 15 giveaway is for the general public, and both giveaways are planned from 8:30 a.m. until noon. Volunteers are needed and encouraged to help, but if groups of more than six are planning to attend, they must call the office at 615-453-5777 or register online at joestorehouse.com in order to participate.
