It turns out there are at least 85 superheroes in Wilson County.
That many runners participated in the Superhero 5K Run to fight against child abuse Saturday.
Proceeds from the event go to the Wilson County Court Appointed Special Advocates and the 15th Judicial District Child Advocacy Center to aid in their efforts to end child abuse and help children caught up in the court system.
CAC Executive Director Debra Daugherty said the 85 runners were joined by 20 children in Kids 50-yard dash, and cooler temperatures turned out to be just right for those breaking a sweat.
"It's went well," she said. "We also had Little Miss Tennessee Dorothy Montanye there. She held the ribbon at the finish line at the 50-yard dash and handed out the medals to the children."
Daugherty said Melissa Rhodes, of Mt. Juliet was the overall female winner, the overall male winner was Taylor Sturm, of Lebanon, and the overall youth winner was Rose Daughtery, 15, of Gallatin. The best news is that the event raised about $4,000.
Daugherty said this is the first Superhero run, but she is hoping it will become an annual event.
"It's a fun thing," she said, "anything to get people up and moving."
Both the CAC and CASA serve abused children in Wilson County.
"Here at CAC we see about 20 abused kids per month," Daugherty said. "We deal with abuse intervention. Children are interviewed here, we provide counseling and we have a panel to decide how a case is going to go, such as if a case will go to criminal court."
CAC also provides sexual abuse prevention training for people who deal with children. Daugherty added CASA oversees court appointed advocates who help children, abused or not, navigate the court system.
"CASA and CAC will be splitting the money, and it will go directly to aid children in Wilson County," Daugherty said.
