The special occasion of 81 Wilson County residents receiving their GED diplomas Thursday night turned into a unforgettable reunion for one Lebanon couple

Fairview Church was the setting Thursday night to honor the GED graduates. Family and friends of graduates made a large appearance, as every seat in the auditorium was filled, leaving many standing. More than 80 men and women of Wilson County received their GED certificates at the ceremony, as well as three in attendance from Trousdale County. In addition to the honored graduates, two special guests appeared at the ceremony Thursday.

Roxie Dean, a singer/songwriter who has worked with the likes of Reba McEntire, Faith Hill and Trace Atkins, made an appearance at the graduation for a special surprise. While on deployment in Iraq, Thomas Hubbard, husband of graduating Amanda Hubbard, asked graduation officials to play Dean’s song “A Soldier’s Wife” before his wife received her GED.  Graduation officials went a step further and contacted Dean, who appeared and sang the song at the beginning of the graduation ceremony.  After Dean performed the song, Amanda Hubbard was called to the stage to meet Dean, as well as receive congratulations and a gift from her, but that was not where the surprise ended.

After Amanda Hubbard posed for photographs with Dean, Amanda turned around to see her husband, Thomas Hubbard, appear from behind the stage curtain.  Amanda quickly made her way across the stage into her waiting husband’s arms.  Thomas Hubbard, a GED graduate himself, with the help of Betty Byrd, director of Adult Learning Center, planned to reunite with his wife and watch her receive her own GED.

Thomas and Amanda Hubbard have been married for five years.  The couple met while Thomas was on leave from Iraq.  Amanda described their unique circumstances. “We hung out together for a few days, then we decided to get married before he was deployed again,'s she said. Amanda then went on to receive her GED as her husband watched from the audience.
