Authorities have identified the person killed in an accident involving a dump truck Friday morning near Middle Tennessee State University.

David R. Chitwood, 28, was seriously injured when he was struck by a dump truck that was turning right from Middle Tennessee Boulevard onto Greenland Drive, according to an updated media release from the Murfreesboro Police Department. Chitwood appeared to be crossing Greenland when he was hit, the release added.

Rutherford County EMS paramedics took Chitwood to St. Thomas of Rutherford County, where he was later pronounced dead, according to a previous media release.

He was an MTSU junior majoring in mass communication, a university spokesman confirmed.

Mary Catherine Freeman, an MTSU student, said she was in her car in the turning lane on Greenland Drive waiting to turn left onto Middle Tennessee Boulevard when the incident occurred at around 8:55 a.m.

Freeman said she heard a scream and then saw a person being struck. The wheelchair, she said, was left empty in the crosswalk.

Police identified the driver as Kevin Lee, 32, a Lebanon native, in an updated release.

Jacobs Construction Co. owns the dump truck, according to Kurt Menck, a supervisor with the company who said he arrived on the scene after the accident.

The Murfreesboro Police Department Fatal Accident Crash Team is investigating the crash, MPD spokesman Kyle Evans confirmed in the initial media release.
