Drug court aims to hire part-timer

Drug Court Coordinator Jeff Dickson came before the Judicial Committee Tuesday night to request funds to hire a part-time employee.

“Prior to the 2013-2014 budget, we had a part-time person in place,” he told the committee. “We had a grant that was providing the pay for that position, and the grant was reduced which meant we had to let that person go.”

He said the Drug Court has been operating with a volunteer in place since that position had to be eliminated and the volunteer “does a great job and is very dependable.” But he added that the workload has not decreased and he is in need of funding for additional hours.

“I’m in need of additional hours, not to the point of a full-time person, I’m asking for 16 hours a week, two eight-hour days,” Dickson said.

Committee member Randy Hall asked, “So what you need is us to take $3,600 from the general fund for a part-time employee?” Dickson replied an affirmative.

A motion was made to pass Dickson’s request as presented and was unanimously approved. The request will now go before the budget committee for approval.
