Relay For Life of Wilson County gets new date, event hours

With an earlier date and new event hours, Relay For Life of Wilson County hopes to give even more neighbors a chance to celebrate, remember and fight back in 2014.

This year’s Relay For Life event will take place June 6 from 6 p.m. until midnight on the track behind Wilson Bank & Trust’s main office in Lebanon.  Anyone interested in fighting cancer is invited to enjoy the festivities, and also to join a fundraising team to help support the local chapter of the American Cancer Society in the weeks leading up to the event.

The event moves up a few weeks from its former slot in late June, and has transitioned from an overnight event to a shorter timeframe during the past two years.

“We’re excited to give families and children a chance to be part of Relay this year as we move ahead of many summer vacation schedules,” Relay Event Chair Tina Winfree said. “With an earlier date and a more compact schedule, we look forward to keeping up the enthusiasm, activities and team participation throughout the fundraising period and the night of the event.”

Relay registration is available online at relayforlife.org/wilsontn, and local Relay information is available by sending an e-mail to relayforlifewilsonco@gmail.com. This year’s fundraising goal is $100,000.

Besides assisting Wilson County cancer patients with services like the Hope Lodge, networking with other survivors and informational support, the American Cancer Society has funded more than $8 million active cancer research grants in Tennessee. The research is performed at facilities like Vanderbilt University Medical Center, which is visited frequently by many Wilson County cancer patients during diagnosis and treatment.

Since its local inception in 1996, Relay For Life of Wilson County has raised more than $1.6 million for the American Cancer Society. The world’s largest grassroots fundraising movement, Relay For Life helps support the American Cancer Society’s mission to save lives by helping people stay well, by helping people get well, by finding cures and by fighting back.
