Fifth-grade students at Friendship Christian School celebrated the inaugural Boot Camp Day Friday.

Fifth-grader Ky Retzke asked the school celebrate the day to learn about the training and sacrifices United States military veterans made and make on behalf of the country.

Her father, Jim, who is president of the Fallen Soldiers March, wanted to help fill her request.

“She asked if some of the ‘rough and tough’ military veterans who support the Fallen Soldiers March could come to her school and answer questions about what it is really like being a combat veteran,” said Retzke.

She also wondered if she and her classmates could sit on their bikes. She got her wish Friday.

Seven combat veterans joined Retzke at the school and he said he had received many emails of veterans who wished to join but could not.

“I want you to know you have inspired so many people,” Retzke said.

Following the question and answer session in which the students posed questions about where the veterans served and where they had visited in their careers, the class was invited outside to be able to sit atop the motorcycles and even rev the engines.

“I’m just so proud of her,” Retzke said. “I am extremely proud of the developing character in my little God fearing, constitutional patriot.”
