Next phase in director search revealed

Now that the candidate pool for the director of schools position has been narrowed to the final two, the second phase of the process has been revealed.

Instead of a second question-and-answer session like the candidates participated in on Saturday, the finalists will each give a presentation to the board on May 3.

“Each candidate is going to make about an hour-long presentation about how they plan to bring the county to the top 5 percent in the state in five years and in 10 years to the top 5 percent in the nation,” Board of Education Chair Don Weathers said.

Clint Satterfield and Donna Wright will each be given the hour time frame to make their case as to how they would accomplish this feat, and the board will then deliberate as to the final choice.

Satterfield is currently director of Trousdale County Schools and Wright is currently assistant director in Williamson County.

Weathers said he thought the interview process “went as it was supposed to, and the interaction back and forth between the candidates and the board members was good.”

In a deviation from the last search for a director, in which the board members hired a consultant to narrow the candidate pool, this time the board chose its own candidates. Another contrast from the last search was the number of candidates that were selected for interviews.

“I think we only interviewed four or five last year,” Weathers said. “I think that shows we had some good, interesting candidates to apply this time. There’s a lot of people interested in being a director of schools.”

The presentations are scheduled for May 3 at the Central Office. The first will be held at 8 a.m. with the second to follow at around 9:30 a.m. The board plans to announce the new director at its monthly meeting May 5 at 6 p.m. at the Central Office.
