Wilson County Fair just weeks away

Staff Reports • Updated Jul 26, 2014 at 12:19 AM

In just a few more weeks, the Wilson County Fairgrounds will light up with activity as the state’s largest fair opens for its latest installment.

The 2014 Wilson County Fair, themed “The Year of the Tomato,” will feature traditional favorites such as the Taste of Wilson County and the Great Give-Away, but it also will feature several new attractions, including nine new sites at the fairgrounds

Attractions will include the Ag-Venture Barn for children, a taxidermy exhibition, Doodles the Clown, the Train Museum, and of course, the Banana Derby.

As it wouldn’t be the Wilson County Fair without music, award-winning country singer Mark Chestnutt will perform Aug. 20. Other musicians include the likes of gospel singer Ivan Parker, The Flatheads, Kirstie Lovelady, Zach Allen and many more.

Intrepid drivers will again see just how much damage they can do in the Demolition Derby, and people looking for something a little more tame can check out the Antique Car Show or the Go-Kart Races.

The fair will also bring out the competitive nature in folks, with contests including the crowd-favorite Fairest of the Fair as well as the Old-Time Square Dancing Competition, the Preemie Quilt Competition and the Clogging Competition. New this year will also be Caps for Cancer, for which entrants will each make a knitted or crocheted cap that will be used by a patient in the Sarah Cannon Cancer Unit.

Also new this year will be the Egg Contest for painted or decorated eggs, white eggs, brown eggs or any other variety.

Fair-goers looking for a bit of an adrenaline rush can get their fill on the Mighty Midway, which will feature 55 rides or attractions, including a few new rides this year – Space Roller, Disko, Vertigo and Zero Gravity.

The fair opens Aug. 15-23, Monday through Friday at 5 p.m.; Saturdays at 10 a.m. and Sunday at noon.
