A day with Griffin

6:20 a.m. – Drive to school
The drive to school for Griffin and his younger brother, Gavin, takes place earlier than usual on this day. He discussed many things involved in his life, including college choices. Pepperdine University, located in Malibu, Ca., is one of the many schools he is considering. Griffin explained classes would operate on a seven-period schedule this school year, a change from the four-block schedule that had been previously used.
6:30 a.m. – Senior tailgate
The senior class decided to have a senior tailgate before school in honor of their first day as seniors. The event featured music, food and corn hole games. Griffin rushed to campus to avoid missing a moment of the festivities. The senior tailgate concluded with a senior class picture and many more individual pictures.
“It’s awesome. We try to make sure not to exclude anyone from the tailgate and looking around, we had people from all different backgrounds. I’m happy people came out and showed up,” said Griffin
7:20 a.m. – Homeroom: Pat Walker
Griffin received his class schedule, which was loaded with AP courses. Students enrolled in AP courses may receive college credit for high exam scores at the end of semesters. Griffin received his locker assignment, agenda book and lunch number, as well. Confusion filled the classroom about the routine for the most anticipated time of the day–lunch.
7:56 a.m. – First Period: Andrea Morris, AP US History
Griffin welcomed substitutes on his first day of AP US History (APUSH). Assignments and homework presented themselves, however. Griffin and his classmates jotted down the assignments and asked questions to problems they did not understand. Talks of summer adventures and feelings about the semester filled the classroom.
“I can’t wait to go home and write a three-page paper,” Griffin said wryly.
8:47 a.m. – Second Period: Barbara Hallums, AP Statistics
Griffin joined some of his friends in a quad of desks and began to chatter about the events of the day so far. Hallums handed out syllabi and discussed the importance of statistics in society. Griffin and his friends received light-hearted, cold stares from Hallums as they continued to chatter during the roll call, a seemingly usual occurrence.
“I love Mrs. Hallums,” said Griffin. “I had classes with her my freshman and sophomore years and over that time I’ve gotten to know her and formed a relationship with her. I can say a couple things in class and it’s all good because we get each other.”
9:38 a.m. – Third Period: Nina Williams, AP Psychology
Griffin, along with many other students, appeared suspicious about what AP Psychology was about. Williams explained the details of the course, reviewed the syllabus and worked in a demonstration of her class-praised profiling ability. Profiling is a key skill to learn in order to understand the psychology of people and Griffin said she has it mastered.
“This class wasn’t required, but it seemed fun. I’m more interested after today. It’ll be fun to see what happens,” said Griffin.
10:29 a.m. – Fourth Period: Walter Crawley, AP Human Geology
Griffin received his assigned seat and noticed the class filled with several underclassmen. His calm demeanor showed as he engaged in discussions and asked several questions to Crawley, who enthusiastically embraced debate. Students shouted answers to questions about the oceans, continents and foreign disputes. Crawley responded to wrong answers with a buzzer sound and encouraged others to answer. Fourth period is Lebanon High’s lunch period and many students made their way to the cafeteria as soon as they could. Principal Sloan and her cafeteria staff delayed lunch times as needed to maintain order.
“I needed an AP class and nothing doesn’t interest me, I love all subjects. I really love anything that has to do with history. This class is especially different because I’m with all lower classmen,” said Griffin.
1:09 p.m. – Scheduling adjustments: Marie Papini, Guidance
Griffin’s schedule omitted a fifth period, so he headed towards the main entrance to his favorite guidance counselor. She advised Griffin about which course to add in order to maintain eligibility for valedictorian honors at the end of the school year. He added another AP course taught by Jim McDowell.
1:27 p.m. – Sixth Period: Barney Griggs, AP Environmental Science
The length of this class was shortened due to the extension of fourth period because of lunch delays. Griffin eagerly listened to the syllabus and plans for the upcoming semester, which including field trips if approved by the school board.
“This is the one class I’ve looked forward to the most,” said Griffin. “Griggs is awesome and it’ll be a fun time. He has his doctorate in this so it’s what he’s about.”
1:55 p.m. – Seventh Period: Alana Coles, AP Literature
This class length was also shortened due to the extended fourth period. Coles discussed her teaching and personal backgrounds and shared her love for books. She discussed the importance of “The Invisible Man” and encouraged Griffin to read it.
“I really enjoy reading,” said Griffin. “This class is all about literature and different types of it. Coles is a club sponsor and she’s really good at that, so I’m sure her class will be awesome.”
2:47 p.m. – Arrive home
