Harwell ousted in semis
MURFREESBORO — Crystal Harwell's quest to add a state singles championship to her 2-year-old doubles crown ended in the Class A-AA semifinals Thursday at Middle Tennessee State's Buck Bouldin Complex.
The Mt. Juliet Christian senior's legendary career ended with a semifinal loss to freshman Madison Paety of University School of Jackson 6-1, 6-2. Harwell opened the day with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Elizabethton senior Susan McGregor.
It was one-and-done for Friendship Christian's doubles teams with thoughts of what might have been perhaps hanging over the boys. Freshman Dillon Bane played with a broken foot sustained while playing frisbee at a team party Wednesday. He and senior partner Andrew Neely still took Elizabethton's Tim Franklin and Seth Wallingford to three sets before falling 6-0, 1-6, 6-4.
On the girls' side, Friendship senior Christen Tressler and junior Paige Watson lost to Madison Academic Magnet sophomores Maria Koonce and Sarah Sopcak 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 in the first round.
