ATHENS — Cumberland dropped a 5-3 and 5-1 double header at Tennessee Wesleyan on Monday.
Wesleyan jumped to a 5-0 lead through two innings of the opener against freshman Courtney Carr of Friendship Christian, who allowed five hits and eight walks, including home runs by Ginny Swerigen and Lacey Williams. Alli Donnelly shut the door for the final 4 1/3 frames on six hits.
But the damage had been done as Beth Williams held CU to six hits and no walks while striking out six. Freshman Kayla Baird of Lebanon reached her for a three-run homer in the fifth.
Wesleyan did its damage more slowly in the nightcap against Jessica Moon, who allowed seven hits and no walks in six innings. The hosts led 1-0 in the first before scoring twice each in the fourth and sixth. Williams drove in three runs, including a homer.
Kassie Taylor had two of Cumberland's six hits, including a home run in the sixth, as the Lady Bulldogs dropped to 3-7.
Cumberland will host Covenant for a scrimmage at 2 p.m. Thursday before welcoming Bethel in for a 1 p.m. TranSouth Conference double header at 1 p.m. next Monday.
