Lady Dawgs ousted by Union 4-3
HENDERSON — Cumberland staved off elimination from the TranSouth Conference softball tournament Thursday with a 4-3 midday win over Bethel at Freed-Hardeman.
But the Lady Bulldogs went down to defeat by the same score late Thursday to Union to end a 12-27 season. Union opened the tournament by handing Cumberland its first loss 6-5 Wednesday.
Freshman Jennifer Brewington of Lebanon took the loss for Cumberland, which got two hits from Mt. Juliet's Amy Eden.
Jamie Smith had two hits and scored three times against Bethel while Kassie Taylor drove in a pair of runs. Taylor and Eden also had a couple of hits apiece.
In other games Thursday, Lambuth ousted Mid-Continent 2-0 and Crichton 8-5 to set up an 11 a.m. matchup this morning with Freed-Hardeman, which fell into the loser's bracket with a 6-0 loss to top-seed Trevecca. Martin Methodist finally shoved Union into the loser's bracket with a 5-4 win in nine innings, setting up a 1 p.m. winner's bracket final today against the Lady Trojans.
