Martinez, Shao sign, head west

Former Cumberland catcher Luis Martinez and ex-Mt. Juliet pitcher Stephen Shao have signed professional contracts and begun their careers in the far west.
Martinez is playing for the Class A Eugene [Ore.] Emeralds after the San Diego Padres drafted the Bulldog junior in the 12th round of the entry draft two weeks ago.
Shao, who recently completed his eligibility at Vanderbilt, is playing Rookie League ball with the Casper [Wyo.] Rockies after the parent Colorado Rockies drafted the left-hander in the 26th round.
Wilson Central-graduate James Adkins, a supplemental first-round pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers out of Tennessee, has not signed, according to the Baseball America Web site.
