MJ Christian netters go down swinging to Merrol Hyde

OLD HICKORY — Mt. Juliet Christian dropped its tennis openers Friday as the Saints were edged 4-3 and the girls went down 6-2 to visiting Merrol Hyde at Old Hickory Country Club.
Singles winners for Merrol Hyde's boys were Braxton Wilson over Caleb Wagler 8-5, Judson Lancina over Sam Anderson 8-2 and Jackson Butler over Ben Brescka 8-2.
Taylor Leath and Flowers got the Hawks' winning point with an 8-6 doubles decision over Wagler and Brescka.
Winners for Mt. Juliet Christian were Josh McKenzie over Alan Wong 8-6, Andrew Ziady over Leath 8-2 and both over Wong and Wilson 8-4.
The Lady Saints got wins from their Nos. 1 and 2 singles – Kate Walker over Alaina Kiskaddon 8-4 and Cindy Overstreet over Melanie Martin 9-7 – before the Lady Hawks swept the rest of the sets. Mt. Juliet Christian was without former state doubles champion Crystal Harwell, who has been hospitalized the past couple of days with an infected kidney, according to her father and coach, John Harwell.
Winners for the Lady Hawks were Shannon Hargis over Chelsea Mobley 8-0, Chelsea Williams over Lauren Osborne 8-3, Sharon Choi over Hannah Jordan 8-4, Ruth Choi over Sara Beth Walker 9-7, Hargis and Martin over Overstreet and Kate Walker 8-6 and Kidkaddon and Williams over Mobley and Jordan 8-1.
Mt. Juliet Christian will host Webb School at noon today at Old Hickory.
