MJ parade takes new route

A clear day greeted spectators as they lined Mt. Juliet's main thoroughfare in anticipation of the annual Christmas parade as it made its way down Mt. Juliet Road Saturday.
The traditional event took on a new route this year, leaving from the Mt. Juliet Little League Park instead of the old location at West Wilson Middle School.
Changing the route may have broken a long tradition, but none of the spectators seemed to mind as they waved to the passing floats and other members of the parade march.
"I'd like to see us use this route again next year," Mt. Juliet Police Chief Ted Floyd said.
Close to 120 entries marched in the festivities Saturday, including 60 floats from area Cub and Girl Scout troops, local churches and businesses.
"It went real well," Mt. Juliet Mayor Linda Elam said. "We had excellent weather today."
The merriment continued at the end of the parade route in Charlie Daniels Park as Christmas in the Park was underway with lots of activities including a train ride for youngsters, inflatables and of course, the big man himself, Santa Claus.
Kids were lined up outside of a small gazebo to have their picture taken with St. Nick and let him know what they wanted for Christmas.
Live entertainment was also on hand as country artist Andy Griggs, the parade Grand Marshall, performed on stage. Local businesses had booths set up and were giving away freebies as well as some craft booths offering goods for purchase.
To help alleviate some of the traffic flow problems, First Baptist Church of Mt. Juliet donated the use of its buses to shuttle residents to and from their vehicles, Parks Director Dennis Buchanan said.
The parade and its sister event drew quite a few residents who came out to enjoy the day and the festivities.
"It was a very good turnout," Floyd said.
