Nearly a week into Congress' annual August recess, U.S. Reps. Bart Gordon and Jim Cooper, both of whom represent parts of Wilson County, have yet to release an appearance schedule – or even schedule when they are going to release a schedule.
This is inexcusable.
While we recognize that Congressmen have the right to unwind – especially after the numerous legislative battles of the current session. We also hope they recognize that their constituents have the right to discuss their concerns with their elected representatives.
In the time since the House adjourned, a number of representatives from around the country have held town hall meetings that have become shouting matches. Protesters have followed from the Tea Parties of earlier this summer expressing their concern over the health-care reforms currently making their way through Congress and other big-government intrusions. A number of congressmen have been shouted down, portrayed as Satan and faced with angry constituents, which seems to have scared off their colleagues from holding that quintessential American event – the town-hall meeting.
Americans of all stripes – from the left and right – have opinions on the future of our country. Strong opinions that should be expressed, for that is the bedrock of America. And elected officials should listen – we do, after all, send them to Washington to represent our concerns.
We implore Rep. Cooper and Rep. Gordon to meet with their constituents and when they do, to follow the example of their fellow Blue Dog Democrat, Rep. Lincoln Davis. Davis traditionally holds a seminar on federal funding during the August recess and after a recent session, was met with a group of protesters. Rather than running, rather than engaging in shouting matches – which run the risk of being all sound and fury, signifying nothing – Davis sat down with those who disagreed with him. By all reports, he engaged them civilly and they him. Davis spent more than hour in an impromptu Q-and-A session and later acknowledged that the dissenters deserve to be heard.
“There are areas where we agree and some where we strongly disagree, but many of these folks came long distances to voice their opinions. In the end, we are all Americans and are working towards a common goal of a more perfect union,” Davis said.
Kudos to you, Congressman. Please ask your colleagues, Reps. Cooper and Gordon, to follow your lead.

Do you EVER remove articles from this category? This is almost a year old.
By: JackCapella on 5/3/10
I am in no way suprised. Gordon has always been slime. Cooper just goes with the flow, a "yes man" to be sure. Maybee we'll be able to get some real representation to step up. The problem will be, as it always is, the people who should run, won't.

Where do you usually find weasel's?
By: Paulw on 12/16/09
Well, it took a quarter of a century for Mr. Gordon to make up his mind in a positive factor. Great job, Bart (yeah, I'm joking)! Have a safe trip home.

I read recently it seems the Supreme Court has ruled there cannot be a Nativity Scene in the U.S. Capitol this Christmas season. This isn't for any religious reasons. They simply have not been able to find three wise men in Washington, D.C. A search for a virgin continues. There will be no problem, however, in finding enough asses to fill the stable.

Much is being said, and printed, about the economy of our nation lately. Our legislators should read and seriously consider a recent article I read, but don't count on it. It is simply too simple. It didn't identify the writer, but I surely agree with them. It was titled 'Patriotic Retirement Plan'. "Dear Mr. President, "There are about 40 million people over 50 in the work force. Pay them $1 million apiece severance pay for early retirement with the following stipulations: "1) They MUST retire. Forty million job openings. Unemployment fixed. "2) They MUST buy a new American CAR. Forty million cars ordered. Auto industry fixed. "3) They MUST either buy a house or pay off their mortgage. Housing crisis fixed. "It can't get any easier than that! "P. S. If more money is needed, have all members of Congress and their constituents pay their taxes... "Mr. President, while you're at it, make Congress retire on Social Security and Medicare. I'll bet both programs would be fixed pronto." Enough said?

Much is being said and written lately about the newest Obamacare medical bill being processed through congress to replace Medicare. There has been many pros and cons regarding the issue. After giving it some serious thought, I have decided Congress should use the KISS program (Keep It Simple Stupid) to approve this new 1990plus page bill, that none of them seems to have read, and don't seem to know anything about it. From the reports I have read, Congress does not want to join us (we common civilians) on this (so called) great new program. They simply want to keep their own. (can't say I blame them) I have written my (our) congressmen offering the KISS program consideration for them... to consider. If they aren't willing to change their program to join us in our new program, which is taking so much time bickering and dickering on the program, why don't they simply just take the general population into their own simple medical program? My argument is 'if its good enough for them, surely its good enough for us.'

Much is being said lately over the ACL(D)U (American Civil Liberties Destruction Union) filing the argument over the cross that was installed 65 years ago, in the desert, in Nevada. After 65 years, what is their argument in wanting to tear it down? It was simply erected to honor our WWI veterans. Now, a federal judge has ordered in be placed in a box until the case is heard in court. It seems it is now unlawful to accept religion or pray in our USA, by some rulings of our federal judicial system. I have read where school officials have been reprimanded for praying with their students. Children are debated for wearing clothing with religious writings on them. This is the USA? Folks, so far, we still have the 1st amendment to our constitution. I recently read a suggestion that we simply place the phase "IN GOD WE TRUST" on every envelope we place in the mail. After all, it is on our money, isn't it? It will be interesting to see if our congress with pass a law forbidding it. I have begun to place that phase on every envelope I place in the mail. If you agree, please join me.

naples, I appreciate your positive comment about me. When someone says anything negative about me and I realize they don't know what they are talking about, I simply consider the source and ignore it. Anyone should have the knowledge before they speak. Some of them seem to be too un-knowledgeable to understand that. I do understand there are many people of our nation who support Obama. That is human nature. But, do they really know who they are supporting? Do they really know his goal for our nation? If they are pro-communist, they are supporting the right person. Mark my word: If Obama can take our nation into bankruptcy, he will declare a state of emergency and place us under martial law. That will be his takeover. It will then be hard to throw the bum out. But we will. This is the USA. We ain't gonna give it up. Another question is: why did our so-called congress allow it to happen? My thoughts? They are too much part of the program. The USA of today isn't the nation I grew up in. Every session of congress takes more control over the citizens and gives more power to the government. You learn a lot about the future from history. When, or if, our congress learns who Obama is I sure would like to know. I simply do not believe he is who he says he is. He's been caught in too many lies.

carmoejorkel, you are a very rude person. Paulw has a lot of truth in what he is saying and it seems that you are offended by that. Your reference to your surprise that uneducated people like him still exist in 2009 ?? What is that supposed to mean. And to say he is ignorant???? It is idiotic to say such a thing to someone you probably don't even know. You know what........sometimes educated people are not nearly as smart as they think they are. One really doesn't have to have a college degree in anything to be an intelligent person. On the Obama issue, I think we should agree to disagree......some of us support him and some of us do not. Isn't that our freedom as an American? And I am an American by birth with proof of birth on record.

Greeting from the Beltway in DC. I have live around here for over two decades. Don't believe more than 15 - 20% of the GOP or Dem could about who they represent. It is only when the elections comes around. They have a well paid job and super benefits for doing nothing other than dispensing HOT AIR. They are surrounded with self interest lobbiest just like themselves. What is in this deal for me. The system is very broken. Bush and Chaney was the very latest to let the lobbiest run the government. The noise level is deafing. Until you banished this cancer from our government we are doomed. God Bless America. If you recall, as has been shown on tv recently, when the last President was in office and in 2006, when the Democrats majority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Advocated loud and angry "Civil De-Obedience" during the G-8 in DC, resulting in the burning of cars and over 1000 arrests for destruction of public property, Creating a fire hazard and other charges, not to mention the devil horn and pitch fork, Hitler Mustache, and Joker pictures of Bush. Thank goodness nothing near this violent has happened so far in Town Halls. A joker poster did surface of Obama (which the left call free speech)that raised the outrage of Liberals, only to find out the artist was not an Obama supporter, but a Dennis Kucinich(D) supporter of his own party's primary. Even Hillary Clinton declared that the Citizens need to speak as loud as need be, until they are heard."And she was sick and tired of being called names for speaking with a loud voice". If you've ever watched C-Span, these Congressmen are no Angels when it comes to being loud and vicious name calling. Speaker Pelosi messed up when she called Americans "Astroturf with Swasticas". She must have not realized she was off the floor of Congress or not in Frisco, speaking to HER supporters. These people are tired of NOT being Heard and have the same right to speak as loud as they need to, until they are heard, and are tired of their voices being drowned out by the angry left. Civil Disobedience has been a part of America for a LONG time. Martin L. King, a highly respected Civil Rights Leader of the Century advocated it and Civil Rights are not restricted to any Age, Gender Race, Disability or political Affiliation. Just because most in the Media disagree with the "Tea Party", Protestor, Angry Mobs, Astroturf or whatever they want to label them, they are tired of Big Government, Out of Control Spending, Government intrusion on Business and private individuals and Non-Transparency. We dont need anyone in the White House that isnt vetted and approved by the Congress, in a do-over of our Constitution, and called a Czar by any President! The country will NOT become Russia, unless we DON'T put a stop to it. We must rain in the power being taken from us and our States and Centralized,by both parties and put it back in control of the people.

This is why I have not renewed my subcripton to the "Lebanon Democrat." It constantly takes issues to one side. Mr. Gordon and Mr. Cooper have busy schedules, they are catering to the most populated areas.

whole minded: Yes, I do think that if a person was not a legitimate citizen they could be put in the POTUS office. As a matter of fact, it has just happened in our nation. Consider these questions I have asked our 'so called' legislators on the matter but have not received any unquestionable answers. I received answers on a question to Bart Gordon and Lamar Alexander that Obama had been investigated and found legally eligible. I asked them where they had gotten that information and why had it not been presented to the public. No answer. I asked why the Electoral committee voted him in office without questioning his eligibility. No answer. I asked why the Senate had approved their vote without questioning his legal eligibility. No answer. I asked why John McCain was questioned about his citizenship but Obama was not. No answer. I asked why eighteen cases presented to courts in many states were refused. No answer. I asked why the 'so called' Supreme Court had a conversation with Obama in private during the campaign. No answer. I am 78 years of age and have never, in my 57 years of voting, heard or read of the Supreme Court having a private conversation with a presidential candidate. Other points of issue: did you happen to notice Obama would not wear the American lapel flag pin until he was nominated? Did you perchance notice him standing with his hands clasped over his crotch during the pledge to our flag? Did you ever wonder why he erred the oath to office. Was it on purpose? Did he place his hand on the Bible when he retook the oath in private that night? We will never know, will we. Why was there no other witness other than the judge who ,supposedly, re-gave him the oath. Why is this man so secretive? What is he trying to hide? Really, are you sure he is who he says he is? Do you take every man for his word. Especially after he has been caught in so many lies as Obaa? If Obama is a natural born citizen of our nation, sitting in that office legally, why won't he simply produce his birth certificate? The truth will finally prevail.
By: DrBlansett on 8/29/09
Neither have ever represented me. I've tried my best to get both of their attentions over the years over some critical issues. Other politicians have responded, but so help me not a peep from Reps Gordon or Cooper. Are they attending sessions in Congress? Anybody sure of it?
By: whole_minded on 8/26/09
Paulw -- Don't you think that, if the POTUS were not a citizen, that his opponents would have called him on the carpet during the campaign? If it were a valid issue, I assure you those who ran in opposition would not have ignored it.
By: Paulw on 8/23/09
whole minded, no issue is a non-issue. It is only deemed non-issue wise in view of the thought of the viewer. I could not bring your plot up on my computer. I can only presume you are referring to Barack Obama being placed in office. If so, do you believe anyone, regardless of whom they are, should be allowed to take the POTUS office without question? Obama, like William Clinton, who was impeached for lying, and Richard Nixon who resigned knowing he was facing impeachment, can be impeached if, and when, he is found to have taken the office illegally. That is called stealing the office. The main question is; who is this man? Is he who he says he is? Was he actually born on the day he says he was born? Do you know? If you do, please let the nation know the actual facts about him. But have proof, like your children need to enroll in school.
By: whole_minded on 8/18/09
http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/.shared/image.html?/photos/uncategorized/2008/06/13/bobirthcertificate.jpg Paul, this is a non-issue. Did you ever think that, perhaps, your attention is being diverted to something so pointless for a reason?
By: Paulw on 8/14/09
carmoejorkel, I'll admit, I may not have as much education as you, but it looks like I may have learned more than you. I always read an article, word for word, before I make a personal comment about it. First, unless you made a typographical error, I am Paulw, (that's a small 'w') not PaulW (I don't know who he or she is). When you mentioned 'lets hope', did you mean 'let's hope', meaning 'let us hope'? I also use the capital letter 'A' when I certify I am an American citizen. I am not an american citizen. It is one of the reasons I served my country in the military; that and your freedom. If you had read my article articulately before you made your comment, surely you would have noticed I stated 'Obama may have been born in Hawaii.' The question was, and is; how can a person with a Kenyan father be legally eligible for the POTUS even if he has a American mother? Especially one only 16 years of age in 1961. Unless I am reading the Constitution incorrectly, they can't. To drill that hole just a little deeper, how do you know Barack Hussein Obama is who he says he is? How can you be so sure he was born on the date he says he was born on? Of all the lies he has been found to be telling, what is to make you think he is telling the truth anytime he opens his mouth? Especially on this Presidential issue? I can only presume you are a Obama fan; so be it. That's what this nation is all about; to have your personal choice. If he is legitimately in that office welcome to the club. If he isn't, go home! I'll further my question; what is he so ashamed of he doesn't want us to know? And to further your unknowledged statement, I do not watch FoxNews, nor any of the other newscasts.
By: carmoejorkel on 8/13/09
PaulW. its amazing that uneducated people like you still exist in 2009. Lets hope you haven't infected your children or family with your virus labelled ignorance. If Obama was not a american citizen, I guarantee Hillary Clinton would have let it be known. Do your on research, think for yourself, form your own opinions. For GOD sakes avoid FOXNEWS!! Please
By: whole_minded on 8/12/09
"We are not smart enough to think for ourselves" so we watch Fox News and listen to Rush Limbaugh. They preach the gospel. And they were born here.
By: Paulw on 8/8/09
One other point on the Bart Gordon issue. I asked him where he got his information regarding Obama's legality and why he hadn't issued it to the public. Believe it or not, I never received an answer.
By: Paulw on 8/8/09
I recently received a email from Bart regarding my question about Obama's eligibility. His answer was; I want to assure you the President Obama was born in Hawaii on August 4, 1961. You may access a copy of president Obama's birth certificate at the non-partisna site...factcheck. Fastcheck is an Obama backer. How does anyone know Obama was born on August 4, 1961? He may have been born in Hawaii, but with a Kenyan father, how can he be declared to be a natural born citizen? H The pictured so-call birth certificate is a 'Certification off live birth'. The only information is shows is his mother's maiden name and her race as Caucasian and his father's name and his race as African. When did African become a race? And the main issue here is: why did our congress allow it to happen? Why did they quesiton McCain but not Obama? It looks an awful lot like what would be called a planed situation.
By: squierrl on 8/7/09
Gordon and Cooper do not care what their constituents have to say. We are not smart enough to think for ourselves so they think for us. Cooper voted to raise our taxes even though he was much against the bills, he is too busy being Pelosi's lap dog.
