Local residents can go for a walk – or run – to help honor America’s veterans.
The Wilson County Veterans Memorial Building Fund 5K will be Nov. 11 to help raise money for a proposed Veteran's Plaza and Museum in Wilson County.
“What we are intending to do is build a park with a wall that will have local veterans’ names, ranks and dates of service,” said Carol Dedman, assistant service officer with the Wilson County Veteran’s Services Office.
Project plans also include a “Circle of Support,” which would feature bricks bearing messages of support from members of the community, and a museum displaying various military uniforms from local veterans.
The county, so far, has raised nearly $18,000 to be used for the project since it was announced last year, according to Dedman. The estimated total cost is $1.5 million.
The 5K will be incorporated into the county’s Veteran’s Day activities.
The day’s events will begin at 7 a.m. at the Wilson County Courthouse with a nondenominational church service by Pastor James Hambrick.
From 7:40-8:45 a.m., 5K participants may check in and pick up their race T-shirts and handheld American flags. The 5K will begin at 9 a.m.
The Veteran’s Parade will begin at 10:15 a.m. at the Lebanon-Wilson County Library on Hatton Ave., and will be followed at 11 a.m. with the Veteran’s Day Ceremony.
Registration for the 5K is open for all ages.
“We would just like everyone who would like to participate to come out and support the veterans,” said Dedman.
She said participants may walk instead of run if they would prefer.
For participants who register and pay by Thursday, registration cost is $12 and includes a 5K T-shirt and a handheld American flag; for participants who register and pay from Oct. 12 through Nov. 1, registration cost is $14 and includes a 5K T-shirt and American flag; for participants who register and pay from Nov. 3-10, registration must be hand-delivered, and the $17 registration cost will include a T-shirt and a flag on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Participants may still register on the day of the event at the check-in table. The cost will be $20 and will include a T-shirt and flag on a first-come, first-serve basis.
