MT. JULIET — One ladder up the postseason food chain, but Mt. Juliet used a formula from last week's District 9-AAA final to take Wilson County's first region soccer championship Wednesday night.

Colbe Earles found the back of the net in a penalty kick shootout to lift the Golden Bears past Hendersonville 2-1 Wednesday night in the Region 5-AAA championship match.

Mt. Juliet beat Hendersonville last Friday for the district crown, also in a shootout.

This time, the teams played 110 minutes, two 10-minute overtime periods and a 25-minute golden goal overtime before going to the shootout.

After each team missed a penalty kick in the first session, Golden Bear goalie Baker Bachman blocked a Hendersonville shot before Earles buried his chance to lift Mt. Juliet to 13-7-3.

The Bears will play at home in their first sectional on Saturday against Ravenwood, which lost the Region 6 final to Franklin 2-0, with the winner advancing to next week's state tournament.

Hendersonville jumped to a 1-0 lead just before halftime.

Mt. Juliet's Cameron Woodfin was fouled in the box and Eric Whitmire put the penalty kick in the back of the net for a 1-1 tie.
