Edna J. Schwab

Edna Juanita (Caruthers) Schwab, 84, of Union, N.J., passed away peacefully with family at her side April 17, 2014.

Born in Statesville on Dec. 12, 1929, she grew up in Lebanon, the daughter of Edgar E. Caruthers and Bonnie (Starks) Caruthers.  She was the eldest of three children (Edgar Jr. and Marshallyne) in a loving home.

Mrs. Schwab was a graduate of Tennessee State University and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, as well as Atlanta University, where she earned a masters of library science.

She shared her love of books and learning with thousands of children throughout her career as an educator and librarian in cities, including Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C. and Newark, N.J.  In Newark, she attained the position of professional librarian for the school district, overseeing resources for libraries across the district.

In addition to her love of reading, Mrs. Schwab was an avid jazz enthusiast and supporter of children’s causes, education and the arts.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Deborah Schwab, of Syracuse, N.Y., as well as three grandchildren, Kristin Noriega, Brian Schwab and Sydney Schwab.  She is also survived by a large extended family, including eight nieces and nephews, 10 grandnieces and grandnephews and six great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.  So proud of her family, a hallmark of her life was her generosity to her family with her faith in God, wisdom and a never-ending spirit of giving.

Funeral arrangements will be private.  Those wishing to make donations in Mrs. Schwab’s memory are asked to send contributions to the Say Yes to Education Syracuse Endowment Fund, 431 E. Fayette St, Syracuse, NY 13202 or sayyessyracuse.org.
