James Horace ‘Jim’ McKinney

Graveside services for Mr. McKinney are scheduled to be conducted Saturday, July 19, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Ridgewood Cemetery in Carthage with Johnny McKinney officiating. Visitation with the McKinney family will be held at the Gordonsville Chapel of Bass Funeral Homes on Friday from 2-8 p.m. Family and friends will gather at the cemetery Saturday just prior to the graveside service.

Mr. McKinney, age 73, of Gordonsville, passed away Tuesday, July 15, 2014 at The Pavilion in Lebanon.

Mr. McKinney was born Nov. 5, 1940 in Smith County, the son of the late Tom and Ona Hunt McKinney. He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Alvin, Clyde, Dan and Millard McKinney.

Jim, as he was known by everyone, was a 1958 graduate of Gordonsville High School. He attended Cumberland College and Tennessee Tech. He worked on the team that built Cordell Hull Dam before going to work at William L. Bonnell Aluminum, from which he retired. He was a member of the Grant Missionary Baptist Church. He was an avid fisherman and sports fan. He kept notebooks full of stats for his favorite sports teams and could tell you the water temperature and level of all the lakes and rivers around. He loved spending time on his houseboat with his friends at Hidden Harbor Marina. 

Mr. McKinney is survived by his four sisters, Frances Ballinger, of Carthage, Evelyn Heitt, of Carthage, Lily (Bobby) Brooks, of Carmel, Ind., Mary Crowe, of Largo, Fla.; sister-in-law, Nell McKinney, of Watertown; several nieces; and nephews.

The McKinney family requests donations be made to the Hidden Harbor Marina Jolly Angel Fund, 2685 Casey Cove Road, Smithville, TN 37166.

The family wants to extend a special thanks to his loving caregivers, sister-in-law, Nell McKinney; niece and nephew, Patsy and Noel Ortiz; and Johnny McKinney.

Bass Funeral Home, Gordonsville Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
