Would you be amazed if I told you supermarkets are now experimenting with a new GPS technology that tracks your movements within a store to offer you deals as you shop for specific items?

Through the lighting system, a new technology company has been making it possible for shoppers to receive deals via app on their smartphones as they determine what the shopper is looking at. Once the determination is made they will alert you through this app giving you discounts, special deals and great coupons. The app will also alert them to specific deals that are available on items within the area they are shopping within the store.

What stores like about this new system is there is no above and beyond cost that stores must invest in. The light fixtures actually are equipped with a LED that blinks in fast pulses telling the position of the shopper to the GPS app. The system is so advanced it can tell a consumer where to locate a particular product and draw you a map on how to get there.

Currently these systems are being tested in Europe, however similar systems have been installed in some stores in the U.S. A particular experiment was conducted that even tracked shopper’s movements and facial expressions when they looked at specific products. Thus, if they could determine if the consumer seemed interested they could pop up a coupon on the app to entice them to buy what they were already considering.

For years, we have been familiar with camera systems that serve to protect the store from shoplifters and serve as a protection for consumers. Now these similar systems have gone one step farther and given the consumer an incentive to buy. Of course, this not only impacts the shopper, but it also benefits the store with increased sales, statistics on impulse buying, as well as shows the habits of shoppers in general.

What’s next in the world of coupons? I guess we’ll have to wait and see. Nothing would surprise me at this point. But, one thing I could say for sure is that smartphones are probably in the future for everyone. If you don’t have one yet, you soon will.
