No one wants to have soggy tricks or treats

Much to the disappointment of children across Wilson County who have to wait a day to get those treats, the Lebanon-Wilson County Chamber of Commerce and city leaders were correct to postpone Halloween on the Square until Friday.

Much to the disappointment of children across Wilson County who have to wait a day to get those treats, the Lebanon-Wilson County Chamber of Commerce and city leaders were correct to postpone Halloween on the Square until Friday.

Sure, there are some purists out there who would argue that it’s not Halloween unless it’s Oct. 31. It’s a sure bet those same people don’t mind Friday or Monday off from work when Christmas falls on a weekend.

The fact is, even if the meteorologists got it wrong just this once, there is still the threat for rain and even thunderstorms in the forecast for Thursday evening. And though Halloween on the Square is billed as a family event, rain would certainly be a scary sight.

Certainly, the decision doesn’t bode well with those who want to attend high school football games Friday night, but that’s all the more reason to get there early and then go watch your favorite Wilson County team. A stop early at Halloween on the Square would still give most the chance to make any of the games with time to spare.

Consider the alternative.

“[As of Tuesday], the National Weather Service is still forecasting [a strong cold] front to move through on Thursday with the potential for severe weather in the form of damaging winds and heavy downpours lasting into the evening hours,” said Capt. Steve Spencer of the Wilson Emergency Management Agency.

The main threat is damaging straight-line winds, but tornadoes and hail could be possible.

The forecast Monday suggested rainfall totals could range from 1-2 inches for the county.

So if anyone was planning on giving it a shot on Halloween, those plans are likely looking pretty soggy, at least at this point.

This Halloween, as with any, we stress safety. And if that means waiting just 24 more hours for fun and candy, well we couldn’t be more for it.

Stay safe and dry and just trick or treat a day later.
