In situations such as the one where a director of schools admits in an open meeting he drank a beer and drove his county-issued vehicle home and reaches an agreement to part ways with his position he took less than a year from being hired, it’s safe to say new leadership is a welcome sight.
All prior circumstances aside, it remains a welcome sight to see Donna Wright in her new role as director of schools in Wilson County.
Wright is the former assistant supervisor of Williamson County Schools. She has also served as assistant supervisor of Knox County Schools. She began her career teaching in Knox County Schools in 1982. She also serves as an adjunct professor at Middle Tennessee State University and has served at Tennessee Technological University, University of Tennessee and Lincoln Memorial University. She holds a bachelors, masters and doctorate, all from the University of Tennessee.
Wright began her tenure as the director of schools for Wilson County on July 1.
“It’s been interesting because I transitioned out of Williamson on Monday into Wilson on Tuesday,” Wright told The Democrat last week. “The people here recognize the importance of that transition.”
One of the first things Wright said she plans to do before school starts is have a meeting with the system’s principals.
“I want the opportunity to meet with all the principals as a group to share my vision to them as a group and give them an opportunity to see what I represent and to ask questions,” she said. “I want to know where they see their school in the scheme of things.”
She said that eventually she would like to be able to meet with teachers, as well as administrators, to discuss their thoughts.
“I’m one of those that it’s not stepping out by yourself; you hold hands and work together – that’s the beauty of it.”
She said her first week has been great and she is “so excited about being here in Wilson County.”
Most of all, she said she looks forward to the start of the school year Aug. 1.
“I’m still like a kid,” she said. “I still get excited about that first day of school. There’s nothing like that first day of school.”
Wright is welcome as Wilson County’s new director of schools. Her leadership, commitment and insight are also welcome sight to the position and the direction of our children. We wish her well.
