I like to think of myself as a pretty smart person. I hardly ever have to add or subtract small numbers on my fingers (okay, that’s a lie) and I’m proud to say I haven’t turned left at a red light in a very long time. In most small towns, the biggest and most elegant building on Main Street is the funeral home. Or an old-age home. These buildings always look as if they might be the starring attraction in Stephen King’s next novel.

Most people who attend church, and many who don’t, know what a “confession” is. Attorneys and judges and juries hear them all the time. So do priests and occasionally pastors. Sometimes people tell something about themselves they are not sure how others will receive. Sometimes it’s an admission to some wrongdoing or even a crime. Sometimes it’s just something embarrassing.

I’m not normally all that interested in trends.

Thumbs up to The Band Perry for performing as a reward to Wilson Central High School students on Monday as winners of Celebrate My Drive. The contest, sponsored by State Farm, encouraged safe driving habits by asking school supporters to vote for their favorite school. Wilson Central won the national contest and received $100,000 in addition to the concert.
