Independence. It’s what we’ll all celebrate on the Fourth of July. It’s what was called for in July 1776 by 56 representatives in the General Congress. It’s what our teens strive for today. They clamor for more freedom. They plead for bigger responsibilities. They make a lot of noise about having more say-so over their own lives. Is it any wonder we celebrate Independence Day with fireworks?

United Way of Wilson County is thrilled to announce it is growing. Although we would love to report this means we’ve managed to expand our financial campaign by great leaps and bounds, the growing we have to report is different in nature, but no less exciting.

We all like to get in and out of the store as quickly as possible. After all, our to-do list does not stop with the grocery store, does it? Have you ever wondered if the self-checkout is really worth the effort or could it be that the self-checkout can really be a blessing for the busy couponer?

Social media has been abuzz since Friday’s Supreme Court decision on gay marriage. From what I’ve been reading, opinion seems pretty much split down the middle from those who think it is the greatest thing since sliced bread, to those who believe doom is now on the horizon.

I wouldn’t say I’m a man of few words. Honestly, for the people who know me, then you know that I love to talk, and statistics say that I’m in pretty good company.

Thumbs-up to the Fourth of July, which will mark the 239th birthday of this country. It’s been a busy time lately, with issues like the Confederate flag and same-sex marriage dominating the news lately. But never forget that we’re all Americans, we all have a stake in doing what’s best for our fellow Americans, and at the heart of it all, we’re the ones responsible for making sure our country has another prosperous 239 years. And with that, enjoy the fireworks and be safe.

It was a little more than two years ago, that rainy day at Cedars of Lebanon Park.

Have you ever had one of those days where you just are feeling down and don’t know what to do about it?

Okay, I am going to speak on the issue of the Confederate Flag.

I’ve listened to dozens of hours of testimony and discussion regarding the potential digital conversion for Wilson County Schools since January. During the span, one thought has always remained in the back of my mind –I wish it happened when I was in school.

Dean, I found your article on the Confederate flag interesting but I do have some questions.

I was fascinated by fellow writer, Larry Woody, in last weeks paper. I really enjoyed that bit of important information. I have been thinking about it ever since I read it. The young deer are getting ready to have their little ones. Larry was warning the public to stay away from them. I have very little trouble keeping my distance from most of the wildlife. Rattle snakes and all of their cousins come to mind. I promise I will never bother them or their young. I have been told that if you carry a flash light, snakes won’t bother you. My old uncle told me about that, and said, “You have to carry it real fast.”

By the time this column is available to readers, news of Leonard Bradley, Jr. passing away will have been published here.

With the shooting deaths in Charleston, South Carolina, combined with the previous deaths in Ferguson, Missouri and Baltimore, Maryland, I have grown increasingly concerned with the issues of race relations in this country. For some reason we can have tolerance for almost anything except someone of another skin tone or people group. This must stop. We must recognize that we are all given our skin tones by our Creator God. If we can root for a person with a darker color than ours on our favorite sports team, than we must stop the nonsense of racial prejudice.

Recently we ran across an article that suggested that children live for the smile of their father. We thought there was power in that sentiment. Dad may not have to utter a word. His smile of approval or delight toward his children can lift a child higher than any trophy.

One of the ways I think my bridge improved (somewhat) is by my partner and me dealing out hands and bidding them to see if we were on the same wave length or what we needed to decide on how to bid certain things.
