It’s not a secret that Wilson County has some of the best schools in the state of Tennessee, as noted by its peers and parents alike. Within the county, there are two distinct school systems including the Wilson County School system and the Lebanon Special School District.

Last August, I wrote my first column for The Lebanon Democrat and explained to my readers how we would all bring out our fashionista in ourselves. I hope 52 weeks later, everyone feels a lot more fashionable.

Tom recently sat with his wife in a hospital in Ohio waiting to hear what the doctors would say about his father-in-law. Just that morning, the 85-year-old man stumbled out of bed and mumbled that someone needed to call 911. He felt unsteady, was confused and his hands shook.

See who got thumbs up this week.

There is an old saying among preachers, “Ninety percent of the work will be done by 10 percent of the people.” I’m sure this is true for many organizations that rely heavily on volunteers to do the needed work.

Thumbs up to both first responders who helped save the life of Peyton Bogle, and to the Bogle family for making an extra effort to say thank you to those who responded to the incident. “Today they showed up at the station and he got to sit in the fire engine and blow the horn. It was a pretty cool moment,” Lebanon Fire Department Shift Commander Bobby Cawthon said. “It was a good moment for the guys because the last time they saw him he was in the ambulance headed to Vanderbilt and a lot of times that’s the last you see of them.”

Why all the fuss about the same-sex marriage law? As far as I know, the law hasn’t caused anyone to become gay; they already were. So, what awful thing is the law going to do?

Thumbs-up to the Fourth of July, which will mark the 239th birthday of this country. It’s been a busy time lately, with issues like the Confederate flag and same-sex marriage dominating the news lately. But never forget that we’re all Americans, we all have a stake in doing what’s best for our fellow Americans, and at the heart of it all, we’re the ones responsible for making sure our country has another prosperous 239 years. And with that, enjoy the fireworks and be safe.

With the shooting deaths in Charleston, South Carolina, combined with the previous deaths in Ferguson, Missouri and Baltimore, Maryland, I have grown increasingly concerned with the issues of race relations in this country. For some reason we can have tolerance for almost anything except someone of another skin tone or people group. This must stop. We must recognize that we are all given our skin tones by our Creator God. If we can root for a person with a darker color than ours on our favorite sports team, than we must stop the nonsense of racial prejudice.

The future of health care has been a debate in this country for a long, long time, and it finally came to a resolution this week when the Supreme Court voted 6-3 to allow the poor and middle class to receive subsidies to pay for the cost of health insurance.
