This week was proclaimed National Farmers Market Week by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack. Secretary Vilsack announced that 8,144 farmers markets are now listed in USDA’s National Farmers Market Directory, up from about 5,000 in 2008. The directory is published online at farmersmarkets.usda.gov.

In the decades after World War II, the United States had powerful policies and popular movements that lifted up working men and women. A third of employed Americans were members of unions, and a pro-worker lobby pushed Washington to raise the minimum wage to more than $10 in today’s dollars.

CBS Evening News anchor Scott Pelley often closes his half-hour newscast with a positive, pick-me-up story. Often it’s reported by Steve Hartman in his feature called “On the Road.” The story is usually a heart-warmer, perhaps a reunion of long-lost family members, a youngster overcoming some dreaded disease by sheer determination or someone simply going the extra mile for someone else. The viewer can’t help but smile, and occasionally wipe a tear away.
