Poet George Herbert once remarked, “One father is more than a hundred schoolmasters.” A local businessman and father of four children said, “I believe that it takes a village … but the village cannot replace a father.”
Are we a charity or a nonprofit? Is there a difference you ask? Charity is both a noun and a verb. For some reason I’ve never liked the term charity. I prefer to think of United Way as an investment resource. We help people invest in their communities, in their neighbors and in themselves.
I just had to write to someone about Lebanon’s Senior Center. After retiring as a nurse with the state of Tennessee for 20-plus years, I agreed to take a twice-weekly nurse’s position at the senior center. I was amazed at how many activities that are provided for these folks.
