Spalding shuts out CU

No sooner did Cumberland return to the NAIA top 20 than Spalding try to bump the Bulldogs back down with a 7-0 shutout Wednesday at Woody Hunt Stadium.
Sean Morgan held the Bulldogs to three hits and three walks while striking out five in nine innings as the Pelicans improved to 17-14 and he climbed to 2-3.
Morgan and Matt Madigan were engaged in a scoreless pitcher's duel until Spalding pushed a pair of runs across in the fourth and one in the fifth. The right-hander was lifted following the sixth inning, having allowed nine hits and three walks while striking out seven to fall to 2-2.
Mark Aubrey blasted a three-run homer off Wilson Central's James Parker to break the game open in the seventh. Another former Wildcat, Matt Burton, and Kevin Bufford split the eighth and ninth as the Bulldogs dropped to 24-14-1.
Clint Alexander's double was one of Cumberland's hits. Eric Mull and Austin Morgan singled for the others.
Cumberland will return to TranSouth Conference action this weekend when Union comes in for a single game at 2 p.m. Friday and a noon double header Saturday.
