The West Wilson Middle School cheerleading team traveled to Disney World recently and returned to Wilson County with top-15 finishes in various competitions.

The group placed fifth the World competition, and 11th in both the Large Junior High and Game Day competitions during the event, held Feb 11-12. The group beat hundreds of squads from around the country and world to earn their honors.

“I think they did very well,” coach Wendi Slone said. The competition marked Slone’s first major event with the schools and her first competition under Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA), although the school has previously competed in UCA competitions.

Slone, who coaches the squad with her daughter, Phoenix, said the squad took home third place last year.

“Top 5 was a big deal for my daughter and myself, along with the girls,” said Slone, who previously coached at Walter J. Baird Middle School for 5 years.

The group also placed in a pair of previous competitions this season before this month’s major competition. Slone said it would be the group’s last event of the season.

The group placed first in Game Day, second in Small Junior High and third in Junior Club at the Mid-South Regionals in South Haven, Miss., and first in Senior Club, and third in both Game Day and Large Junior High in the North Alabama Regional competition. The group also finished first in the Tennessee Extreme competition in Brentwood and fourth in Small Junior High at the TSSAA State competition at MTSU.

Team members include: eighth graders Abigail Gronda, Alyssa Hicks, Aynsleigh Myers, Grace Sanders, Gracen Miller, Hayley Suttles, Kayli Pardue, Mackenzie Fraiser and Presley Blunkall; seventh graders Addie Williams, Ava Miller, Erin Kelley and Lauren Hildreth; and sixth graders Chloe Meisner, Emma Hicks, Elise Brown, Kate Grandstaff, Kylie Hitchcox, Gia Tyler, Rylee Skinner and Jayden Pentell.

Slone said West Wilson will hold cheerleading tryouts in May and anyone interested should keep an eye on the school website.
