101st Airborne to announce deployment
Officials from the First Brigade Combat Team of the 101st Airborne Division will be at Cumberland University on Tuesday to share unclassified details about the unit’s upcoming deployment to Afghanistan.
The open community briefing will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the June and Bill Heydel Fine Arts Center at the Spring Street entrance to the campus.
“They are basically going to convey to the community as to what their assignment is and what they will be doing over there in Afghanistan. It is my understanding they will be going in pretty deep, so this is going to be an important mission,” said Phillip Carter with Cumberland University.
Officials anticipate that the unit will deploy in November.
The deployment will likely include 3,000 soldiers from the Third Brigade Combat Team and nearly 2,600 soldiers from the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade – both from Fort Campbell’s 101st Airborne Division.
