BREAKING NEWS: Lebanon, Friendship, MJ girls post first-round region wins
Lebanon's girls ended a five-year region drought and Friendship Christian a decade dry spell with first-round victories Friday night.
The Devilettes defeated Kenwood 59-48 in overtime in the Region 5-AAA opener in Clarksville. It was Lebanon's first region win since a run to the sectional in 2008.
Meanwhile, Friendship scratched a 10-year Region 4-A itch by pulling away from visiting Clay County 50-34, eliminating last year's Class A state champions at the Bay Family Sportsplex. It was the Lady Commanders' first region win since they made the second of back-to-back State Tournament trips 10 years ago.
Also, Mt. Juliet breezed past visiting West Creek 58-21, setting up a semifinal meeting between the Lady Bears and Lebanon at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Beech.
Watertown was eliminated from Region 4-A play 72-43 at Jackson County.
The Tigerettes won't be playing when the tournament moves to their home floor for Monday's semifinals. Friendship will face Jackson County in what is expected to be a 6 p.m. tipoff, with Clarkrange and Gordonsville in the other semi to follow.
