Bulldogs tied for 22nd in preseason poll
Cumberland will start the football season in a tie for 22nd place in the preseason NAIA poll released Monday.
The Bulldogs are tied with Langston [Okla.] with 53 points apiece. No. 21 Doane [Neb.] collected 58 points.
Cumberland is the fourth of five Mid-South Conference teams in the top 25. No. 4 Georgetown, co-No. 11 Bethel and No. 19 University of the Cumberlands are ahead of the Bulldogs while No. 25 Campbellsville rounds out the poll.
The NAIA poll largely determines the 16-team playoff field and its seeding at the end of the season.
Cumberland was No. 23 in the spring poll after going 7-3 in 2011.
The Bulldogs will open the 2012 season Sept. 1 in the Big River Bowl at Dyersburg against Kansas Wesleyan. University of the Cumberlands will come to Lebanon on Sept. 8 for CU's first game at its new home, Nokes-Lasater Field.
Agee finishes second at Nashville Amateur
NASHVILLE — Cumberland rising senior A.C. Agee carded a two-round score of four-under, finishing second in the 2012 James Fyke Ladies Municipal Amateur Championships over the weekend at McCabe and Harpeth Hills Golf Clubs.
The annual event was played over two days and is the premiere public links championship for the metro area.
The Dyersburg native shot four-under-par 68 on the first day at McCabe and trailed Belmont’s Shay Sullivan and Evin Edens by two shots heading into the final round.
The three players were all one-under-par through nine holes in the final round at Harpeth Hills before an hour rain delay. Edens, the defending champion, faded on the back nine and finished third overall.
Agee and Sullivan were both two-under-par for the day heading to the 17th hole, a short par four, but Agee’s drive found the greenside bunker and she took bogey. Sullivan finished with a two-round total of 136 for a four-shot victory.
