'Girls Day Out' just for women

Girls just wanna have fun. That's the idea behind the third annual "Girls Day Out" planned for Saturday at the James E. Ward Agricultural Center.

Organizer Valerie White said the event is designed for women, girls, moms, daughters and nieces to discover cutting-edge products, beauty and make-up advice, new fashion ideas, jewelry, candles, luxurious spa treatments and a vendor offering "therapeutic chocolate."

"We'll have vendors selling everything from slip covers for Kleenex boxes, to body wraps, Christmas items and weight-loss girdles," White said. "I try to get a little bit of everything for us to spoil ourselves."

She said the women who attend can have a glamour portrait made and the chance to walk away with some great free items. The event is also an opportunity to sample products before they're bought.

"This started up when a few women decided we needed to get together and have a day just for us - no men, just us," White said.

The event will also acknowledge women's often neglected health issues.

"Women often take care of everyone else before they take care of themselves," White said, adding Girls Day Out will also feature free blood pressure and body mass index checks, information about breast cancer and a HomeSafe booth with information for women at risk from domestic violence.

She said she expects at least 50 vendors, as well as local entertainment.

There will also be $1 tickets for sale for door prizes, but you must be present to win. The event will kick off at 11 a.m., and admission is free.

"I didn't put an ending time," she said. "Let them shop until they drop."
