Lebanon High School officials cautioned the public and local businesses Wednesday to beware of a scam that may be headed their way.
Lebanon High School assistant principal and athletic director Darian Brown spread the word about a group evidently based in Virginia telling locals they are affiliated with the schoo. Brown said the group claims to be working on an athletic calendar and is asking for money for orders.
"They call themselves Scholarship Calendars, and they call people and act like they're working with us to produce a sports calendar. We just caught wind of this morning," Brown said Wednesday.
He added that someone called the school this morning because they had spent money for the same thing last year and never saw a calendar.
"They did it last year, and we didn't know," Brown said. "They said all the money would go back to LHS, but we never saw any of it."
Scholarship Calendars is listed online in a business listing in Tazewell County, Va., at 314 Crabapple St., in Bluefield Va. The phone number is listed as 276-988-4453.
Brown said calls to the listed number didn't produce any answers.
"When you call the number, it goes to a lady's house in Tazewell, Va. She said she just answers the phone," he said.
Brown said any person or business contacted about the calendar should call him at Lebanon High School and let him know. The school can be reached at 615-444-9610.
"They got away with this last year," he said. "I just want to put a stop to this as fast as we can."
