Man shot by police remains stable

MT. JULIET - A Mt. Juliet police spokesman said a police officer shot a man who threatened to kill himself and then pointed a gun at officers and a bystander before dawn Saturday.

Michael Wayne McNabb, 56, was shot, according to Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokesperson Kristin Helm.

He was taken to Vanderbilt Medical Center, where he remained Monday in stable condition, police spokesman Tyler Chandler said.

The shooting took place at 2:30 Saturday morning at the 700 block of Stonegate Drive in the Stonegate mobile home community.

Chandler said officers responded to a call of a man threatening to kill himself. Officers arrived at the scene and set up a perimeter around the home. He said McNabb came out of the home and pointed a gun at officers and a bystander.

An officer fired at McNabb, and the subject was hit by the officer's gunfire, but it's uncertain how many times he was shot. Chandler would not release the name of the officer who fired on the man.

An agent with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation got a warrant on McNabb on an aggravated assault charge, Chandler said Monday.

Two women family members and a boy were in the home during the incident and were not aware of what happened until officers notified them. No one else was hurt during the incident, according to the release.

"This is certainly a traumatic event for the injured subject, his family and the officers involved," said police Chief James Hambrick. "Our thoughts and prayers are extended for a quick recovery. Police officers can go through their entire career and never be involved in this type of incident. This is one of the most difficult things an officer has to do."

The officer is on administrative leave pending an investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
