Maynard earns MSC Pitcher of the Week honors

Cumberland’s Courtney Maynard was voted the Mid-South Conference Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday after picking up two wins and tossing 19 innings in three contests last week for the Bulldogs.

The Lancaster native allowed one earned run on six hits in a complete game at Martin Methodist. The Bulldogs scored five runs in the top of the seventh in a 6-2 victory over the RedHawks, making a winner of Maynard.

The junior right-hander suffered a loss the next day against Virginia-Wise despite giving up just one earned run and striking out nine. CU committed three errors in the 5-3 loss, opening the door for four unearned runs by the Cavaliers.

Maynard rebounded with a five-inning shutout against the University of the Cumberlands, allowing three hits with six strikeouts. For the week she posted a 2-1 record with a 0.74 earned-run-average and just three walks with 19 strikeouts.

For the season Maynard is 5-1 with a 1.02 ERA in 41 innings of work and 37 strikeouts in six appearances.

Cumberland’s doubleheader at Georgetown College set for Tuesday was canceled due to rain. The Bulldogs will begin play in the Gulf Coast Invitational on Friday in Gulf Shores, Ala., taking on Houston-Victoria and Brenau. The Bulldogs will play Spring Hill and Columbia [Mo.] on Saturday and competition in the tournament ends on Sunday.

CU will return home March 13-14, taking on Campbellsville and Martin Methodist in doubleheaders at the CU softball field.
