Mt. Juliet falls short of region crown
Feb 28, 2013 3:45 pm
Mt. Juliet and Beech split on the season in four matchups, but it was the last that possibly stung the worst for the Lady Bears.
Mt. Juliet (24-9) took a 42-34 loss to Beech (26-8) on Wednesday night on the road to finish runner-up in Class 5-AAA.
“I think both teams kind of got off to a slow start. It was a real low-scoring game,” said Mt. Juliet coach Chris Fryer. “That Beech team is a tough team to beat. We just came up a little short.”
Beech, which now moves on to play host to Antioch on Saturday at 7 p.m. in a sub-regional game, won its first region championship since 2002 and tied with Mt. Juliet in head-to-head matchups on the season.
Mt. Juliet will face Brentwood on the road Saturday at 7 p.m. in the other sub-regional. A win could put the Lady Bears up against Beech for a fifth meeting this season to determine which team moves on to state.
Karly Dyer and Sally McCabe each had nine points for Mt. Juliet with Dyer picking up a pair of three pointers.
Beech’s McKenna Taylor led all scorers with 13.
