Mr. Martin, 52, died Sunday, Jan. 29, 2012 following complications from cancer. The lifelong Wilson County resident made local history in 1978 when at age 19, he became the youngest person ever elected to the County Commission where he served the 21st District. The surprising win before the County Commission was the first of many for Martin, who just three years later was appointed by the County Commission to fill the unexpired term of Circuit Court Clerk Ray Woodard, who retired in 1981.

Martin finished the 14 months remaining in Woodard’s term and in 1982 sought and won re-election to the Circuit Court Clerk post, where he served four more terms.

Martin returned to public service after being elected from a field of 10 candidates in 2000 for Assessor of Property where he served one term. In addition to holding public office for more than two decades, Martin was also active in a number of civic clubs and organizations, including the Lions Club where he served two terms as president and received the Lion of the Year award. He was a member of the Lebanon Jaycees and a recipient of the civic group’s Distinguished Service Award.

Martin also served as President of the Babe Ruth Baseball League and was a longtime member of Gladeville Baptist Church and a current member of First Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Carter Martin Sr. and grandparents, Frank Martin, Frederick Martin Boshears and Pat (Lucille) Bryan.

Survivors include: mother, Jeanette Bryan Martin Walker; children, Rachel (Chad) Lanning, Elizabeth (Adam) Patterson and Clint Martin; sisters, Angela (Michael) Lalonde and Becky Martin; grandson, Chad Thomas Lanning Jr. and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Lebanon Lions Club.
