Mr. Crutchfield, 87, most recently of Duluth, Ga., died Dec. 17, 2012. He was born in Lebanon to James and Hattie Crutchfield. He graduated from Wilson County High School. He joined the Navy in 1942, serving in WW II as a Navy ship signalman in the Pacific Theater. He completed his college education at Tennessee State University, graduating in 1949 with a B.S. in Health and Physical Education. He served as a teacher, football and basketball coach at WCHS.
He married Anita Watkins (TSU’54), who shared his love of sports and education. They moved to Detroit in 1957 for better educational opportunities for their children. They raised three daughters who all went on to become college educated, successful women. Clarence joined the Detroit Public Schools and while teaching, he attended the University of Detroit and earned a Master’s degree in Counseling and Guidance. He retired as a counselor after 37 years of service.
In retirement, he turned to his love of sports – swimming, tennis, golf and closely followed his beloved Detroit Lions and Tigers. He moved to metro Atlanta in 2005 to be closer to two of his daughters. Initially reluctant, he enjoyed the climate and made many friends at his home at Parc at Duluth. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity and a life-long member of the Church of Christ, most recently the Duluth Church of Christ.
Clarence was preceded in death by his wife of 28 years, Anita Watkins Crutchfield; brothers, Harry, Bill, Sidney and Carl; and sister, Margaret Ashworth.
