Funeral services for Mr. Mills will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 6 at Hunter Funeral Home with Bro. Gary Wilson officiating. Visitation 6-8 p.m. Friday and prior to services Saturday. Interment with military honors at Jones Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Mills, 87, of Alexandria, Tenn., went to be with the Lord on April 2, 2013. He was the son of the late Nora (Holt) Mills and Rev. William Mitchell Mills. He was born in Dandridge, Tenn.
Claude was a loving husband, father, grandpa, great-grandpa, uncle and a World War II veteran. At the age of 16, he joined the U.S. Navy. Upon seeing the ships in the harbor in Charleston, S.C., Claude knew right away that he wanted to be aboard one of the vessels on the open sea. He served his country well and received a Purple Heart as a token of his bravery. Claude was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Lebanon and a retired Inspector with the U.S. Dept. of Defense.
He is survived by loving wife and best friend of 67 years, Dezza Lee (Capps) Mills; children, Rebecca (Russ) McBride and David Lee (Janet) Mills; grandchildren, Laurel (Gary) Foreman, Alisha (Michael) Wilhide, Judith Mills (Bubba Oliver), Zac McBride, Hannah Mills, Samuel (Alyse) Mills and Micah Mills; great-grandchildren, Kailee, Claudia, Jesse, Cohen, Dakota, Bailey, MacKenzie, Tristan, Scarlett, Savannah and special niece Carolyn Griffee Mills. Claude is also preceded in death by three brothers and an infant sister.
Claude was always smiling and he brought joy to everyone in his presence. He was also one of the greatest story tellers anyone had ever heard. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren would sit in awe for hours listening to him tell stories of his amazing adventures. He was the moral compass of his family and his testimony lives on. His family will miss him dearly and will always remember him as a kind, patient, and gracious man.
The family would like to thank Mary for her compassionate care.
